My Family Doctor Finding The Right One For Your Family

It’s a good idea to have a good my family doctor. It’s not always easy though since many doctors have already filled their patient slots. In Canada, it is quite hard to find a doctor who is still taking new patients, in fact. Add to that the fact that people should be comfortable with the doctor they choose and the search becomes even more challenging.

Family GPs can treat entire families, but that doesn’t mean they are actually as good at relating to adults as they are to kids or vice versa. There are still doctors who have old fashioned ideas about women and others who are no good with children. It might take some time to look for the perfect doctor who can handle all members of the family.

How do you go about finding the best family GP? Word of mouth is a great way to get someone trustworthy. When someone else recommends a doctor, it is very probable that they are doing so because they are happy with the results and with the physician’s bedside manner. Getting someone to recommend a doc to you doesn’t guarantee that he or she is right for your family, but it is a very good start.

There are a few things to look for in a doctor. First of all, it’s best to encounter someone who is equally good with adults and children, even if there aren’t any in the family yet. This ensures that the family can grow and not have to change GPs. Not all GPs are good with kids, so take the time to do some research.

One huge issue in Canada right now is the fact that many physicians have too many patients. They just can’t take anymore. This means searching not only for a good physician but one who is actually accepting patients. It’s not easy to wait a couple of months to find out just what those nasty headaches are being caused by, so look for a doctor who is able to schedule appointments within a couple of weeks. He or she should also be able to accommodate emergencies.

If finding a GP who is actually available just isn’t happening, a clinic could be the answer. These are also called shared practices and they are just that, several GPs or specialists who share an office. When one isn’t available to attend patients, others will be. It makes it a bit difficult to form strong relationships with anyone doctor, but it does mean there will be consistent medical care available.

Younger physicians are in hot demand since they aren’t about to retire any time soon. However, many prefer older, wiser docs who have already seen a lot and are often better for the experience. After everything is said and done, however, this is mostly just personal preference.

It’s difficult to encounter great doctors who have spaces open. Taking the time to find someone that the entire family is comfortable with, however, is worth the hassle. Should everything go well, the family could be seeing the doctor for decades to come. Look for the person who is best according to personal tastes, not everyone will like the same person.

When an individual is ill and in need of a remedy they should go and consult a physician. There are many different types of doctors or specialists who each focus in a specific field of medical practice such as naturopathic, or family practice.

I need to find a family doctor for me and my kids when we move to our new city. We will have to make sure we find someone we find out about through word of mouth, like you said. That seems to be the most reliable way to find someone you know will do a good job.

  • Thanks for this advice for finding a family doctor. I’m glad that you mentioned you should find a doctor that is equally good with adults and children. I wonder if it could be good to ask a doctor what age group they typically treat.

Since family GPs can treat entire families, perhaps I should find a family doctor for my children’s next checkup. As long as they’re recommended to me by word of mouth, I should be able to find a good one. If they’re equally good with adults and children, they should be able to treat me and my children with great satisfaction.

Thanks for the tip to choose a family doctor by your own tastes since not everyone will like the same doctor. This is helpful since I’m trying to find a doctor near us that I can take my kids to, so I’m looking up how to find a good one. I’ll have to ask around and see if I can visit the office so I can meet the doctor to check which one I feel will fit our family best.

I like how you mentioned looking for a general physician to take care of your family’s medical needs should be one taken seriously since you would want to look for a practicing doctor who can not only handle mine and my wife’s needs but that of my children as well. Although the allure of hiring a younger doctor is there, sometimes it’s better to look for an older physician since they already have years of experience down the belt and would be able to offer better advice. At the same time, making sure that they’re compatible with everyone in the family in terms of personality is always good to keep in mind.
